I have a question, where can I find information on the evolution of castles between 1100-1200? I am guessing that this was a time of change in the castle's basic design because of the crusades, and that ideas for fortification were brought back to Europe during this time. Philip Davis Personally I'd start with a good book. There are many which cover the developement of the castle during the whole medieval period, including the 12th century. I'd recommend the following;-
Sidney Toy - Castles, Their Constructions and History.
Tom McNeill - Castles
M.W. Thompson - The Rise of the Castle
And as I rode by Dalton-Hall Beneath the turrets high, A maiden on the castle-wall Was singing merrily: The Outlaw by Sir Walter Scott
